For those who may be interested we have developed a related
application for use on mobile devices.  The idea is to put a
simplified version of this type of approach in lots of people’s hands
(through smartphones and other devices) – that can then update
backwards and forwards with a web database.

It displays maps and allows you to zoom around and/or pinpoint your
location using the devices' GPS (or an external GPS if you have one).
You can draw points, lines, polygons and add any attribute data.
Shapes and their attributes are stored to a map server in standard GIS
format and are immediately available for sharing and use with ArcGIS,
QuantumGIS, etc.  In addition to GIS shapes and attributes, any other
observation data can be captured by setting up the appropriate form
and database fields.

The software will run on any modern smartphone (android phones and
tablets, iphones, ipods and ipads, etc, as well as on your PC).  One
key feature of the application is that can also work off-line. Once
you've loaded the app and the map tiles for your area you don't need
an internet connection to use the application.  You can save your
shapes and data locally while you are in the field, and upload it to
your server when you are back in coverage.

We have a range of prototype applications around weed mapping and
other areas.  The system is well suited for interfacing with a range
of biodiversity databases.  We are keen to work with organisations who
may be interested in developing specific applications across areas
such as biodiversity recording, weed and pest animal control etc.
