Marlborough District Council SNA System

Marlborough District Council's (MDC) SNA Database was developed in Access by Peter Hamill. It has been designed to integrate with the wider MDC Property Database, but this link has not yet been activated.

The system distinguishes between properties (land parcels) and ecologically significant sites. If an ecological site straddles two or more properties, the site is divided along the property boundaries. This allows the Council to keep site reports specific to only one property and owner, and therefore maintain confidentiality.

The database contains two main tables: one to hold data about properties, and one to hold data about sites. The property table enables the system to be linked to the wider Council system. This table also holds data, such as ownership details, and a link to an electronic version of the original ecological site survey.

The site table holds the data detailed in the site attributes list. The attributes are also visible as fields in the main window screen below.

Lists of species at the site are not recorded in the ecologists's report and therefore not in this system. Eco Type, Site Type and other drop-down lists are set in a glossary table. This means that another user could easily modify the menus to fit their own requirements.

Ranking of the site against SNA criteria is recorded as low, low-medium, medium, medium-high, and high by the ecologists. These rankings are then converted into a numerical value of 1-5. The National Priorities Rankings are recorded as a value of 1-5 also. Management Feasibility is given a value of 1-3. The total values for each of these three areas are then concatenated into an overall ranking.

MDC have made this database available to other councils as a free download (604kb).
