Nature Heritage Fund Strategies

The Department of Conservation have produced regional Protection Strategies for both Auckland and Canterbury.

These documents are intended to assist in assessing priorities for protection or restoration of indigenous ecosystems. They contain information about the presumed nature and extent of the original (pre-human) vegetation, and the current indigenous vegetation, in ecological districts.

The strategies divide each region into ecological districts.

For each of its ecological districts, the Auckland Strategy describes the ecosystem types which are present and their protection status, threatened species recorded and the originally rare ecosystems potentially present. Recommendations are included on priorities for protection for each Ecological District.

In each of the 59 ecological districts in Canterbury, the nature and extent, both original and present, is described in the Strategy document. The most significant existing protected natural areas are listed and the potential for further protection in each ecological district is outlined.
