Sorry about that blank email. Here's what I meant to say...
Greetings and welcome to Dataversity in 2009!
In addition to the national Dataversity meeting in Wellington on 19 and
20 March,
http://dataversity.org.nz/r/topic/7qd3FhlBOWP2I0p9mYpkCh
I am planning a series of regional Dataversity meetings this year. The
first is to be in Canterbury on Tuesday 23rd or Wednesday 24th February.
Every time I've got a group of biodiversity data people together, there
has been an interesting discussion and exchange of ideas. Just swapping
notes about who is doing what often stirs up useful ideas and
opportunities to solve problems. Meeting together face to face is a good
way to find out a lot about what each other are doing, and makes it
easier to maintain ongoing contact. When participants are all from one
region, they are likely to be facing common issues, and to be able to
keep in touch around them.
This meeting is therefore open to all local government biodiversity
managers from the Canterbury region, and to staff of DoC, Landcare
Research and other agencies who are interested to participate. If you're
from out of Canterbury and would like to participate, either face to
face or via audio conference, you're invited, too.
Please let me know directly, or by adding to this topic in the public
discussion group.
http://dataversity.org.nz/r/topic/7caoYxMQPa2DgZSUTQ9084
I'll finalise the date and venue, when I have a few people confirmed as
interested.
cheers,

The idea of meeting up with other Canterbury local governments and agencies
sounds interesting. It would be good to hear of others locally who are aiming
to achieve similar outcomes to us at CCC. We are starting on the road to
putting our own house in order re. biological data recording and management -
and we're right at the beginning of the (long) process. To share ideas and
approaches and establish a local network could be very useful.
However, the proposed meeting in Wellington in March is of more immediate
interest; to hear from agencies in other areas of the country where some of
this work has already taken place. Presumably that is still happening? It takes
priority for us, although we would still like to be involved in a Canterbury
get-together.

To clarify the dates I am proposing for the Canterbury meeting, they are
Tuesday 24 or Wednesday 25 February (not the Monday or the
non-existent dates in my last email).
If you're interested, please let me know your preferred day.
The Wellington meeting, by the way, is definitely still on.

Pressure of other work has kept me away from Dataversity for some time.
Paul Fisher (who I have copied this message to) has recently started
with NCC (this week) in the environmental monitoring area and has a
background which includes biological databases. I would like Paul F to
become involved with this debate, have access to the Dataversity site
and perhaps attend the Christchurch meeting is he can make the
arrangements in time.
Cheers

Canterbury Dataversity Meeting
==============================
Purpose
-------
The purpose of the meeting is to find ways to improve the management of
terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity data in local government.
The meeting aims to achieve this by raising awareness of the systems
that already exist, and the challenges that are faced by those who look
after biodata in local government. The meeting will also build
relationships that will be useful for ongoing collaboration, and
generate useful ideas and opportunities to solve problems.
Time, Date, Venue & Lunch
-------------------------
11:30-14:00
Wednesday 25 February
Includes lunch.
Canterbury Innovation Incubator
200 Armagh St, Christchurch
Cii is between Manchester St and Madras St, over
the road from the Centennial pool. There's a parking
building on the corner of Manchester St and Gloucester St.
Participants
------------
Please RSVP if you are not on this list and would like to participate.
Frances Schmechel of ECan
Adrian Meredith of ECan
Wayne McCallum of ECan
Stephen Hall of ECan
Oliver Mould of CCC
Liz Garson of CCC
Di Carter of CCC
Paul Fisher of Nelson City Council
Peter Kloosterman of Timaru District Council
Nick Spencer of Landcare Research
Kevin Richards of Landcare Research
Aaron Wilton of Landcare Research
Lynette Hartley of DoC
Madan Gautam of DoC
Dan Randow
Programme
---------
11:30 Introductions
12:00 Lunch
12:30 Presentations & Discussion
14:00 Finish
Presentations
-------------
If you look after a system that would be of use to local government
biodata managers, you are invited to make a brief presentation about
that.
Ideal would be three slides covering the following.
What data the system deals with.
Who can access and contribute data, and how.
How the system is used or could be used by local government.
We will have Internet access, but you are advised to bring slides.
The following presentations are confirmed.
Lynette Hartley: DoC's Five Minute Bird Count Database

Further to this, as I am booked out on the 6:20 to Hm and the meeting is
scheduled to finish at 2:00, I would be very interested in talking
further with people from ECAN and the CC Council.
In particular I am interested in what a "whole of local government"
structure might be. Presently we have LGNZ as a Wn lobby group acting as
a voice for LG, but it is very difficult for them to provide more than
this, especially when Central Government wants to engage with Councils.
What are some other alternatives?
I am also happy to meet with others to discuss other aspects of sharing
and integration of local/regional/central government data and
information, especially from a the "mainlanders" perspective/experience
~8-)
Please contact me directly.

Jim - I'm happy to chat with you after the meeting, before you have to head off
back to Hamilton. I'll keep the afternoon free, then we can play it by ear.

Thank you to all who participated in the meeting held on Weds 25 in
Christchurch. I was pleased the amount of conversation that occurred,
both during the formal parts of the meeting, and over lunch. At the same
time, the complexity of the issues, challenges and opportunities faced
by the participants quickly became apparent. This was one small step,
that we can follow up with conversations online, and in future local and
national meetings.
Others who were at the Canterbury meeting, please post your reflections
about it to this topic.
Below are some some photos from the meeting.
