Christchurch Biodata Mini-Workshop: Dataversity Public Discussion: Dataversity

And, for the central South Islanders among us… you are warmly invited to
a mini-workshop to swap notes and build relationships around
biodiversity and biosecurity data management in the Canterbury region
(and surrounding areas).

The workshop will be held from 12:30 to 15:00 on Wednesday 24 February
in the Waitaki Room at Environment Canterbury, and will include lunch.

All central and local government, DoC, CRI, private sector and NGO
people involved with biodata are invited to participate. The workshop
will provide opportunities to find out what others in the region are
doing, and to share ideas about systems and practices. Most importantly,
this will be a chance to build and refresh relationships that will be
useful for ongoing collaboration around biodata. Oh, and did I mention
lunch?

SUMMARY OF TOPICS

DoC's National Biodiversity Metadata Database

Madan gave a tour of DoC's soon-to-be-released
biodiversity metadata database. The system will
allow members of the public to access information
about datasets relating to biodiversity projects.
The public may also upload metadata. In time,
information about all new DoC projects and many
historic projects will be available in the system.

Council Requirements

Frances, Philip, Peter and Dale provided insights
into the challenges facing councils
trying to manage data about SNAs, and
other areas of possible ecological value.
Even where data is held, it is often
difficult to access, and where it is not
held, it is almost impossible to know where
to start searching other datasets, and often
difficult to interpret the data.

NZ Organisms Register

Julian and Jerry gave an overview of on NZOR, which
will aggregate taxonomic data from various national
datasets, and provide a single source where
this is available to local councils. NZOR will
probably bring on its first consumers this
year.

FBIS

Alastair Suren is reviewing NIWA's Freshwater
Biodiversity Information System (FBIS), and is
is looking for people to provide feedback about
your requirements for a system like FBIS, and
how FBIS is meeting those needs.

The Virtual Herbarium

Aaron provided an overview of plans for the Virtual
Herbarium project, which will provide an interface
to data federated from various NZ herbaria.

National Weeds Distribution Database

Julian gave an overview of this project,

which will aggregate regional data to provide
a national picture of weeds distribution.

Dataversity Public Discussion

Dan encouraged participants to use the
Dataversity public discussion group to
swap notes about local biodata initiatives.

Dataversity System Guide

Dan gave a brief tour of the System Guide
and many present were surprised to find
that it existed, and that they had the
ability to edit it. If you have not seen the

FEEDBACK

Of the ten respondents, six agreed and four strongly agreed that the workshop
was useful to them.

Participants reported that what was most value about the workshop, was either
the relationships established and developed, or finding out about the biodata
work that other organisations are doing, or both.

Participants mentioned the following ways in which the workshop could have been
improved:

Better food.

Longer time for unstructured discussion.

More structure: a planned agenda.

Asked when the next workshop should be held, participants were around equally
split between three-monthly, six-monthly and annually.
