Call for workshop delegates

Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council are hosting a one day workshop
on Monday 11 May to learn more about the Environment Bay of Plenty Inetgrated
Biodiversity Suite and Auckland Regional Council EcoBase software.

Both database systems were developed to deal with the storage and management of
ecological data and associated environmental information and showcased at the
national Dataversity meeting in March.

Learn more about the software requirements, applications, tools, deliverables
and support for each system.

Discuss specific data management requirements for Councils; including ongoing
project work, monitoring programmes and servicing stake holders.

Discuss data standards, software upgrades and associated costs, data sharing
and more!

Build relationships that will be useful for ongoing collaboration.

Thanks for your support in attending the workshop on 11 May in Nelson.
We have had a positive response from Councils to date. The workshop is
also open to central government / CRIs that work closely with Councils:

Hi Paul,Thanks for these notes.

Some comments:

1. It is great to see the continuing interest in collaboration across the
Councils for the development and use of process, methodologies and tools.
2. The mention of a Trust for doing this, does flag the possibility that
it will be required to be a Council Controlled Organisation under the LGA.
(This shouldn't be seen as scary, but more an additional step requiring a
bit more planning.)
3. When mentioning GIS, I would like to see the interface (API?) as
something more generic than perhaps an interface to a proprietary GIS
package. The many data visualisation and analytical tools becoming available
on the Web (including Wolfram/Alpha) make access to data ever more
important.
4. New consumer technologies such as smart phones that can augment what
is seen also require access to data (including the data uncertainty).

A recent situation provides a good example.

Some new roads are being planned that pass, next to and through, areas of
significance including biodiversity. As there is some urgency with this
project things have been done quickly. Recognising that some nationally
significant vegetation was going to be destroyed and that traffic noise was
likely to be an issue, mitigation was planned in the form of enhanced
protection and additional extensions to existing significant vegetation.
Unfortunately, because the significance of the vegetation was not well know,
much of vegetation targeted for protection and enhancement has recently been
destroyed by the existing user of the land (not the land owner) who viewed
the scrub as a waste land.

What would have happened if data about this vegetation had been a lot more
accessible and visible in easily available maps and plans?
